Luminant Celebrates Environmental Successes
DALLAS -

Environmental stewardship and innovation a daily priority

From growing wind-power purchases to a pilot project that generates hydropower in power plant discharge canals, Luminant is delivering on its commitment to provide reliable and increasingly clean sources of electricity.

“In recognition of Earth Day, we're celebrating the steps we've taken to help move Texas toward an even more environmentally sound future,” said Shawn Glacken, Luminant senior vice president of environmental services. “We are proud to be a leader in exploring new and innovative emerging solutions to produce even cleaner, more efficient power.”

Here are just a few of Luminant's environmental successes:
  • With wind-energy purchases of 900 megawatts – enough to serve 400,000 Texans – Luminant is the top purchaser of this renewable resource, with a commitment to increase purchases to 1,500 MW.
  • Luminant's newest units, Oak Grove 1 and 2 and Sandow 5, are the nation's first lignite coal units with activated sorbent injection technology to control mercury emissions. Luminant is also voluntarily equipping its entire coal fleet with sorbent systems.
  • Luminant continues its cutting-edge research into the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide through work at its power plants, university research and company funding and participation in pilot projects across the country.
  • From the beginning, Luminant has set the reclamation standard, reclaiming more than 66,000 acres for use as forests, pastures, wildlife habitat and cropland. Reforestation is an important element in this process – with nearly 29 million trees planted to date.
  • Luminant is committed to recycling byproducts from its coal plants; in 2009, 2.2 billion pounds found new life in the roofing, concrete and carpet industries, as well as in oil-field and road-paving projects.
  • Our unique Environmental Research Program has produced outstanding scientists and environmental professionals and has provided the company with sound environmental solutions since 1971. This program's strength was recognized in 2009 by the federal Office of Surface Mining as the recipient of its highest national award, the Director's Award.
  • The Luminant Scholar Program educates Texas youth on environmental protection while providing up to $50,000 in annual scholarships and grants. In addition, Luminant supports and provides experts for teacher workshops each summer.
