Environmental Stewardship

Over the years, Luminant has been in the forefront of environmental stewardship and innovation. Today, Luminant continues to deliver on its commitment to provide reliable and increasingly clean sources of electricity and move Texas toward an even more environmentally sound future.

Cleaner, Dependable Power

Luminant has added 2,200 megawatts of cleaner coal generation to satisfy the state's need for additional power. Luminant is also evaluating the expansion of up to 3,400 megawatts of new nuclear generation, which has the lowest air-emission rate—zero—of any conventional generation technology available. At the same time, Luminant's voluntary environmental retrofits are reducing nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions across the coal fleet in the largest such program of its kind.

Wind Power Leadership

Luminant has led in promoting Texas wind generation since the industry's infancy. Luminant is a leading wind purchaser in Texas, and the state is the unrivaled national producer of this renewable energy resource.

Climate Stewardship

For two decades, Luminant's voluntary climate change program has been among the nation's largest individual company efforts. In keeping with EFH's environmental commitments, Luminant is developing an even stronger, more comprehensive approach to climate change.

Generation Solutions R&D

Luminant is funding and evaluating the research, development and commercialization of technologies to capture and remove carbon from coal-fueled generation, including integrated gasification combined cycle. Luminant's public-private research collaboration on mercury controls over the past decade has contributed to the commercial readiness of advanced technology that is being installed on all the company's coal-fueled generation.

Renewable Superhighway

Oncor's participation in building 800 miles of Texas' huge Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) transmission project will enable over 18,500 megawatts of wind generation to reach the market beginning in 2014, putting Texas among the top 10 wind generators globally. Oncor's use of recycled steel to build almost 4,000 towers makes the green project even greener.

TXU Energy's Renewable Energy Plans

TXU Energy's suite of renewable plans and products includes a 100 percent Texas wind energy offer and a revolutionary, affordable rooftop solar power option that allows savings on energy costs from day one.

Solar Program

An innovative sustainability solution from TXU Energy that helps North Texas customers go solar without the steep upfront costs. This is a joint SolarLease program with SolarCity that launched in 1Q2010 and received tremendous initial customer response. A new SolarLease offer was recently announced in July 2011 which is backed by $5 million of incentives funded by SolarCity.

Distributed Renewable Generation (DRG)

Launched in 2009, this program supports customers' efforts to use more renewable energy by giving customers the ability to sell the "surplus" electricity generated by their distributed renewable generation equipment to TXU Energy. In 2009, 2010 and 2011-to-date, the customer has been compensated for their "surplus" with a significant premium over relevant wholesale prices.

Take a Load Off, Texas

Oncor's innovative Take a Load Off, Texas offers several energy efficiency incentive programs. These programs help residential consumers, business owners and government and educational facilities help jump-start their energy efficiency efforts. Vehicles for a Cleaner Texas

TXU Energy and Luminant have teamed up with Environment Texas and others to demonstrate support for plug-in cars, while Oncor has introduced hybrid-powered bucket trucks into its fleet and partnered with Ford in support of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles as part of its Small Changes, Better Texas program.

  • TXU Energy EV Accelerator Program. A program first announced during 3Q 2010 to help jump-start electric vehicle adoption in North Texas. TXU Energy has announced agreements with the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, and McKinney. As part of signing an eligible commodity contract with TXU Energy, the company will purchase and install Level 2 or Level 3 charging stations in coordination with local leaders.
