Luminant teams demonstrate commitment to powering Texas during peak demand

Luminant employees recently helped the Electric Reliability Council of Texas power through the 69,000 megawatt threshold for the first time, with peak demand reaching 69,783 MW on Monday, Aug. 10, between 4 and 5 p.m.

With ERCOT forecasting record peak demand for that day, Luminant teams worked over the weekend under tight deadlines to make sure all units were ready.

According to Steve Horn, senior vice president of fossil generation, this standout performance is a testament to employees’ dedication to teamwork, operational excellence and resolute focus on safety.

“Some coal and natural gas units were brought offline for maintenance over the weekend and each one was back online by Monday to meet the peak demand. Without question, our employees go the extra mile to keep our plants in top operating condition,” Horn says.

In preparation for Monday’s high demand, one coal unit went offline over the weekend and was brought back online in record time.

In addition to its baseload plants, Luminant also relies on its gas fleet to help meet extra demand.

“We prepare all year for these peak demand days and we do a lot of work in the spring and fall to prep our units for optimal performance in the summer,” says Brad Barksdale, gas plant operations director. “As with any machine, intermittent repairs are necessary and over the weekend, our gas plant teams worked around the clock to make sure our plants were ready to go for another week of top demand.”

Luminant’s Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant team also played a critical role in supplying the grid with much-needed power. With an operating capacity of 2,300 MW, the plant can power nearly 1.15 million homes in normal conditions and 460,000 homes in periods of peak demand.
