Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas Selects TXU Energy to Power New Iconic Landmark in North Texas

11-03-2011

IRVING –

The Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas, a new iconic landmark in North Texas and one of the most energy efficient convention facilities in North America, has selected TXU Energy to provide a green electricity plan that complements the facility’s extreme energy efficiency.

The Irving Convention Center will buy 100 percent Green-e Certified Renewable Energy produced in Texas. Under the contract with TXU Energy, the center also is eligible for BrightenSM GreenBack, an energy-saving solution from TXU Energy that offers rebates on future energy-efficiency initiatives. The program can pay for electric vehicles and charging stations or for further energy-efficiency upgrades.

“With more than 275,000 square feet of space to manage, we need a strong and trustworthy electricity provider that shares our vision of sustainability,” said Tom Meehan, general manager for the Irving Convention Center. “TXU Energy provides the renewable energy we want as well as the expertise and customer service we need to create top-quality experiences for our guests.”

Unlike typical convention centers — horizontal big boxes with delivery bays — the Irving Convention Center features a unique stacked layout that allows the building to simultaneously host sporting events, corporate and trade meetings, and civic functions. The center’s vertical form creates maximum useable space in a minimum footprint that is self-shading. The project is registered for LEED certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.

“The Irving Convention Center has taken a bold direction that is a visual masterpiece and a world-class example of energy-efficient architecture,” said Gabe Castro, vice president of business markets for TXU Energy. “We are thrilled to be chosen as their energy provider, and together, we will support the continued development of renewable energy sources in Texas.”
