DALLAS –As a proud veteran supporter and military-friendly employer, Luminant is helping provide the keys to a bright future for a North Texas family, donating $5,000 to Operation Finally Home. The nonprofit organization provides custom-made,mortgage-free homes to wounded and disabled veterans and will use Luminant’s contribution to complete a home in Little Elm,Texas for U.S. Army Sgt. Stephen Jackel and his family.
“Veterans, guardsmen and reservists play an essential role at Luminant, accounting for more than 15 percent of our employee base, and we’re honored to support those who have served our country through Operation Finally Home,” said Ken Smith, Luminant vice president of construction management. “The traits that our American heroes demonstrate – leadership, commitment to safety and dedication to excellence –closely align with our company’s values, and this is a chance to give back to those who have bravely served our country.”
Founded in 2005, Operation Finally Home has completed 48 homes nationally, including 34 in Texas. The group plans to build an additional 14 homes in Texas by the end of 2014 and finish construction on the Jackel house this fall.
“As a family of eight, the Jackels will now have the opportunity to heal from Stephen’s injuries in a caring and secure environment, thanks to Luminant’s generous gift,” said Daniel Vargas, Operation Finally Home director of marketing. “Seeing the financial and emotional burden lifted off of yet another deserving veteran and their family is a moment to behold. It’s experiences like this that challenge us to further our mission of bringing communities together to support our wounded veterans.”
Sgt. Jackel sustained his injuries in August 2011 while serving in Afghanistan. A bomb exploded under his vehicle resulting in wounds that led to bilateral leg amputations and traumatic brain injury.
This donation is one of Luminant’s many efforts to help veterans transitioning from military to civilian life. The company and its employees are also proud to take part in a national veteran mentoring program through American Corporate Partners, which is designed to assist veterans with their career transitions and development.
Luminant also focuses on additional outreach initiatives through regular attendance at military career fairs and other engagement opportunities, specifically in search of skilled veterans, guardsmen and reservists to join its team.
