Cowherd, age 26 and a Prairie View A&M civil engineering graduate, was tragically killed while trying to defuse a street altercation in Dallas this past August. He began a career with Luminant in November 2012, and as an associate engineer for environmental services, he prepared and submitted mine permits to the Railroad Commission of Texas.
A model employee, Cowherd had a bright future at Luminant, according to Kim Mireles, fellow co-worker and vice president of environmental services at Luminant. “We lost a smart young man who had a passion for his engineering career, his community and doing the right thing. We wanted to honor his memory through a gift to the scholarship fund established by his parents and someday hope to hire civil engineering students of his same caliber,” added Mireles.
For Cowherd’s mother, Michelle, the scholarship is an opportunity to give life to Terrell’s dreams. “Terrell’s name will now live on in perpetuity, and we hope this scholarship will encourage current and future Prairie View A&M students to pursue a career in the engineering field. As a volunteer at homeless shelters and a student mentor, Terrell truly believed in helping others and our goal is to give the gift of education,” Michelle Cowherd said.
Scholarship applicants must have a 2.8 GPA or higher, major in Prairie View A&M’s civil engineering program and actively serve in their community. The Cowherd family appreciates all donations to the scholarship fund. Click here to make a contribution.
