Nearly 100,000 Texans have selected free electricity at night or free electricity all weekend from TXU Energy, the first retailer to offer a choice of free electricity in Texas.
TXU Energy Free NightsSM and TXU Energy Free WeekendsSM are two TXU Energy Right Time PricingSM plans that help customers recognize the value of managing when and how they use electricity to reduce their spending. Since the first plan launched, almost 100,000 residential customers have selected a Right Time Pricing plan. In an even shorter period, hundreds of businesses have chosen one of two TXU Energy Business Power Hours plans, additional Right Time Pricing options.
“We are thrilled these plans have resonated with so many Texans, and we are excited to help them save,” said Jennifer Pulliam, director of products and innovation for TXU Energy. “When our plans deliver savings, our customers recognize us as their advocate, and they recommend TXU Energy to their friends and family. That’s good for them and for us. And when Texans shift electricity usage away from peak demand periods, that helps maintain the electricity supply for everyone.”
The state’s electricity grid faces its highest summer demand between 3 and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Shifting electricity consumption away from those hours relieves strain on the system.
TXU Energy Free Nights offers free electricity from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day of the year. TXU Energy Free Weekends delivers free electricity from 12 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday all year. Annually, Texas households use about 25 percent of their electricity during those nighttime hours and 25 percent during those weekend hours. That means average Texans who select a Right Time Pricing plan can get a quarter of their electricity free without making any changes.
Customers who choose a Right Time Savings plan and make simple shifts of various activities to the nighttime or weekend hours can enjoy even more free electricity. TXU Energy urges customers to consider rescheduling when they:
- Run dishwashers.
- Tackle household chores, such as laundry and vacuuming.
- Operate pool pumps.
- Cook meals.
- Record and enjoy television programs.
- Use gaming systems.
All consumers can reduce their overall consumption and spending by:
- Using a programmable thermostat and making changes for different seasons, as well as for different activities around their homes and businesses.
- Raising their summer thermostat settings a few degrees and using ceiling or box fans in occupied rooms.
- Maintaining their heating and cooling systems and regularly changing system filters.
- Avoiding stove top and oven cooking during the hottest periods of the day.
- Drawing window covers and angling blinds up when it’s hot outside to block heat from coming in.
“No matter which choice of free electricity customers select, we can help them manage their consumption and spend less,” Pulliam said. “Once customers see how easy TXU Energy makes it to track when and how they use electricity, they get excited about finding opportunities to save.”
