As CEO of TXU Energy, words like “drive,” “determination” and “focus” describe how Jim Burke approaches business. These are also the words that describe how he attacked his personal goal of competing at the Ironman World Championships – a goal he achieved when he crossed the finish line in Hawaii on October 8.

Competing in the islands was a long-time aspiration, supported by years of dedication and training.

“I set a goal of completing the Ironman World Championship when I was in college about 25 years ago, and for years the only thing I knew about it came from the NBC highlight show,” Jim said. “Having the opportunity to compete in Hawaii definitely exceeded my expectations.”

Ironman competitions consist of a 2.4 mile swim, and a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a full 26 mile marathon. Jim completed the Ironman World Championship in just 10 hours, 35 minutes and 47 seconds, and placed 3rd out of the 21 competitors in the Executive Challenge division while competing with 1,900 athletes from around the world.

Inspirational goals seem to run in the EFH family. A number of employees push themselves towards excellence both in and out of the office, and those individuals served as an inspiration while Jim was working towards the Ironman.

Luminant’s Angela Tortorice will likely complete more than 50 full marathons just this year alone, TXU Energy’s Stephan Verdeyen is a top competitor in Sprint Triathlons in Texas and Bill Moore, Luminant’s chief legal officer, has ridden the same Tour de France cycling routes the pros have for years, just to name a few.

“There are many amazing people within our company who have done incredible things in the spirit of pushing themselves towards goals that are inspiring to all of us,” Jim said.

Perhaps most inspiring are the one hundred-plus members of the company-wide TXU Energy bike team and their support of the Bike MS: Sam’s Club Ride every May. Since 2003, these dedicated employees have raised almost half a million dollars during the annual fundraiser to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Over the years, Jim has found great camaraderie with the exceptional individuals found throughout the EFH family of companies. Those friendships and success stories have helped inspire him to push and achieve this goal.

“I was thrilled to represent our company, and I’m very appreciative of all the inspiration and support I got from everyone at EFH, Luminant and TXU Energy all along the journey.”
